The Japanese Odyssey

An ultracycling adventure across Japan

Women* Found

When we launched our “Women* Wanted” operation, we realized that the gesture was highly symbolic. To be honest, we didn’t expect much response or many applications.
Boy were we wrong.

We got kind of overwhelmed by your applications - especially Caroline, who had the arduous responsibility of selecting the winners.
Well, better let her tell how it went.

Greetings earthlings,

Having to make a choice that will directly impact someone else’s life is dreadful.
Why have I said yes to this?

Let me make something perfectly clear here: my choices say nothing about the worth of those who applied. My decision was not made on merit. If someone had said they could waddle and chirp like an American Woodcock, I’d have chosen them on the spot. It’s like being randomly chosen by a computer, except it wasn’t a computer, it was only random me. If you were not chosen: you were not less worthy. If you were chosen: you were lucky lucky, but you don’t owe me any golden cookies (well, maybe a golden crumb).

I wish I could’ve chosen all of you amazing souls who applied, thrown out the men, after unashamedly taking all their money (I’m a bike messenger: I have no money, no saddle on my bike, and no bike at all), and make the whole Japanese Odyssey a woman-and-NB-only event. I’m kidding of course: we might keep two men. Inverted system. Lucky them this time. And I am still kidding: please don’t throw me in a pyroclastic flow.

It was a great honor to read all of you, and being burdened with having to pick up only two. I will never take up such a mission again though. I’ll stick to carrying bloody stuff across my town, and eating tiny cookies.

Without further nonsense, my choices are:

  • From Japan: Satomi Yamada
  • Outside Japan: Cam Nguyen

To everyone else: you are beautiful, please forgive my soul. I will withdraw near a temple for a few months now, to repent.

For those of you who weren’t selected, thanks again for the time you devoted to your application ; we sincerely hope to see you on the starting line nonetheless.
